Wanstead roundup, 5.12.11: Announcing the Wanstead Gift List

• There is much talk about supporting local traders at the moment, especially after the opening of Westfield. As a contribution to these efforts, Wansteadium is pleased to open nominations for the Wanstead Gift List 2011. The rules are simple: readers are invited to nominate anything suitable for a Christmas gift which can be bought in Wanstead. The best and most original gifts will make up a top 10 which we will publish here, and the reward for nominators will be a warm glow of community spirit. Please send nominations by the end of the week to wansteadium@gmail.com and include whatever details of the item you can.

• Plans to allow hundreds of Australians to camp on the Wanstead Cricket Club pitch were approved last week. The ongoing controversy over the planned police base on Wanstead Flats for the Olympics reaches a head in the High Court on Monday.

• Some indication of the ambitions for the post-Olympic site was hinted at in a Sunday Times article this week (£), which said Boris Johnson plans’ will make the area rival the South Bank. The northern end of the site will include a “vast playground”, wetland and landscaping.

• Overheard in Wanstead this week:

• A reminder that you can place adverts for free on Wansteadium Classifieds. The ads can be for things you want to sell, or like this week’s additions, a job vacancy. It’s for a client services manager for a baby-swimming business. There is also an unrelated call for food photographers.

Anyone can add an event to the Wansteadium Events calendar by sending details to events@wansteadium.com.
