Wanstead bookshop needs staff (no pay but good for conscience)
With just about a month until the opening of the Oxfam bookshop in Wanstead High Street, the builders are in the former travel shop getting things ready. Other retailers seem happy at the news, with one expressing relief that predictions of a Costa Coffee or a Subway didn’t happen.
Oxfam area manager Mark Appiah told Wansteadium he was “really pleased the community in Wanstead is so enthusiastic about the bookshop” and asked anyone interested in volunteering in the shop to get in touch.

A glimpse inside Wanstead’s veterinary hospital (squeamish beware)
Most Wanstead residents have probably driven past the veterinary hospital on New Wanstead hundreds of times on their way from Green Man roundabout. But even pet-owners will only have been in there on the rarest of occasion. Now blogger and student vet Stefan has told us more than we need to know about life inside. (Seriously, if you are squeamish or eating something, do something else right now.)
I was able to watch Johan do a full spay on Candy. A Pyometra is when the uterus is infected with pus. This raises the dogs temperature and has the capability to explode inside the dog, filling it completely with pus and the dog could end up dying from septacaemia. It was very very unhealthy looking, panting and uncomfortable with a putrid smelling discharge. I had to wear a hat and a mask and scrubs because the hospital was a bit more sterilised, but the surgery was once again, fascinating. He cut the stomach cleanly, ligated the blood vessels and just lifted out the uterus gently. He had to lift it away from the abdominal cavity just incase it burst.
That’s more than enough, though if you are for some reason wanting to know more, there is some on his blog, along with pictures too. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Sorry if you’re disturbed by it, bu it is all part of Wanstead’s rich tapestry etc etc.
Wanstead news roundup, 7.07.10; Toilets, lollipops, and curries
* Among the cuts forecast for Redbridge Borough Council are the complete closure of public toilets and the possible ending of lollipop men and ladies, the latter on the basis that most primary school children are accompanied to school anyway. It does mean there is a possible business opportunity for Christchurch Green, though. A former public toilet on Shepherd’s Bush Green became a trendy members’ club.

* And finally. This poster (below, but without the number being obscured) was spotted on the old antique shop next to the pet shop on Wanstead High Street. Either someone with a sense of humour and a car to dispose of, or someone put out of work by the closure of Wanstead Sauna whose poster has been amusingly annotated. There’s only one way to find out – ringing the number – but perhaps it can comfortably remain a mystery.

Matt Longmoor, a 20-year-old Wanstead photographer, has charted some of the sights of his teenage years with his nifty Canon S31S. He cites the landscapes of Ansel Adams as one of his inspirations, and it’s not hard to see what he means.
