Helz (aka Helen Maule) is an East London based visual artist. Working in a variety of disciplines, through a variety of mediums, Helz has been able to learn and grow. She has contributed work to art trails, exhibitions and festivals both in the UK and around the world and has been featured on several blogs. Helz is currently the Director of Events and Outreach with East London based dance and arts collective, Rain Crew.
“I named the exhibit ‘Kaleidoscope’ after the toys we used to play with as kids. As you move them the image is continually changing by reflecting back on itself, with different shapes and patterns. The more we grow as people, we change and as we change we are shaped by our tastes, our values and the things and people we surround ourselves with. In turn this things are reflected in us, we are them and they are us. The work you see within this exhibition are reflections of an ever changing me – heavily influenced by Hip Hop culture, friendships and my Caribbean heritage.
When I was approached about exhibiting my work at Giovanna’s, I was humbled that anyone would even consider my work worthy. This is my first solo exhibition and am honoured for it to be at Gio’s. Giovanna’s is synonymous with family and community and that same ethic is what influences and inspires me and my work.”
