Stephen Ellcock: England on Fire Midwinter Special
As the winter solstice approaches, join Stephen Ellcock, Zoë Howe and Ben Edge for a midwinter celebration of festive, visionary and occult art, community seasonal rituals, witchcraft and other folk practices that offer resistance, protest and a way for people today to come together and forge a better future. Embark on a hallucinatory visual journey and reclaim Albion as an eternally inspiring and anarchic domain – an England on fire.
Stephen Ellcock curates an online museum of images, visual delights, oddities and wonders drawn from every conceivable culture, era and corner of the globe. He is the author, with Mat Osman, of England on Fire, as well as other books including All Good Things, The Book of Change and The Cosmic Dance.
Zoë Howe is the author of Witchful Thinking, as well as an array of music books including biographies of Poly Styrene, The Slits, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Lee Brilleaux and Wilko Johnson. Zoë was part of the team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché, and she hosts the ‘Rock ’n’ Roll Witch’ show on Soho Radio.
Ben Edge is an artist, songwriter and folklorist, who over the past seven years has been obsessively documenting the seasonal folk customs of the British Isles. In 2021 his ‘Frontline Folklore’ series was included alongside Simon Costin’s ‘Museum of British Folklore’ in the ‘Ritual Britain’ exhibition, which attracted over 10,000 visitors, extensive media coverage and viral exposure across social media.
England on Fire is a book about English art like no other. Forget the tired rogues’ gallery of lords and ladies, forget the tall ships and haywains. These images cut to the heart of England’s psychic landscapes to portray an Albion unhinged, where magic and rebellion and destruction are the horses to which the country is hitched.
