East London’s remarkable humanist heritage
Monday 26 June 2023 at 7:30 pm
An evening with Madeleine Goodall, co-ordinator of the Humanist Heritage Project. Maddy will cast a fascinating light on some of East London’s humanist and free-thinking pioneers from the last two centuries, many of them women.
Some names may be familiar, such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Annie Besant and Sylvia Pankhurst. Others deserve greater recognition, such as Eliza Sharples, who opened a coffee shop for freethinkers in Hackney Road in 1859, or Zona Vallance, founder member of the East London Ethical Society in 1890.
Free and open to all. Doors open 19.00 for socialising. Talk starts 19.30. Join us at The George afterwards for further socialising.
