We are delighted that Angharad Shanahan (Mark’s daughter) will be the soloist for this evening’s concert, performing the beautiful aria Per Pieta from Mozart’s effervescent opera Cosi fan Tutte, followed by a selection of songs from Cantaloube’s evocative Songs of the Auvergne.

Mahler’s symphonies aim to encompass ‘the whole world’. In his 4th symphony the classical textures of the first movement are followed by a diabolical scherzo with a weirdly retuned solo violin; a slow movement which builds from utter calm to a depiction of the opening of the gates of heaven; and a finale in which a soprano (Angharad) sings of a child’s vision of paradise.
