Good reasons not to do this…

A swan pecking at funeral flowers on Eagle Pond earlier this week

The idea of setting funeral arrangements free to float away on Eagle Pond might be superficially appealing…. but the number of plastic bits and bobs and strange things which go along with the arrangements, and the presence of curious hungry wildlife, means it is not going to be a welcome habit…

  1. Eagle Pond has never been a pond for eagles, they can not swim! It is a wildlife habitat for wildfoul and what a variety we can ponder over, enjoy and muse with at times. Why on earth anyone would want to potentially harm these beautiful birds. Symbolically swans have ushered in all sorts of sentimental and commitment emotions for we humans and tend to suffer from the same extremes of modern capitalism. Please by all means come and observe but please be cautious and seek reputable guidance.

  2. Swans are highly protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it a criminal offense to intentionally injure, kill, or take them, or to damage their nests and eggs. They are also protected under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

On this basis surely its illegal to cause them and their habitat harm, especially by plastic pollution????
