In this episode: the door on Wanstead’s neglected (but much admired) phone box is back. Meanwhile the Wanstead Society reports it is not allowed, as a charity, to take on custodianship of the box. But the Wanstead Community Gardeners are developing an option where the phone box could be converted into a miniature hothouse.

why do The Wanstead Society always refer to themselves as a charity? its rather misleading when they dont appear to be on the uk list of charities:

PS hope sign above door is reinstated.
Interesting. They are obliged to show their Charity Number on their website but a quick search and I cannot see it. I am sure it is an oversight but displaying it might clear up the matter.
I dont believe they are a (registered) charity.
I’ve checked with them and they are officially a “Small Charity” which does not require registration in the way a registered charity does.
Can you use it for what it’s meant for – making phone calls
