Kinema 2023: Matilda the Musical

Outdoor family cinema in the gardens of Christ Church, Wanstead – reliably Wanstead’s favourite night out of the year. This year’s presentation is Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, starring Emma Thompson, with lyrics by Tim Minchin. Revolting children and their families are most welcome!

Bring something to keep you warm and something to sit on – we’ll guide people with chairs towards the back, and those with picnic blankets/tarps towards the front. Please let us know in advance if you have accessibility needs. Only assistance dogs can be admitted.

Like Dahl’s book, everything in this film, from tenderness to terror, is so exuberant. (D. Telegraph)

To a Skylark: Classical, folk and experimental music

Local musicians Joe Walters and Lucy Crowe curate an evening of music exploring themes associated with the skylark, our local Wanstead Flats resident struggling to survive in modern times. Joe and Lucy will perform with and alongside their friends, also locals of the area, and also musicians who feel the push and pull of urban life alongside their front garden that is Epping Forest. Expect classical song intertwined with folk, entangled with experimental indie and reimagined with free improvisation, all presented by leading exponents of these respective fields.

Lucy Crowe – soprano
Chris Higginbottom – drums, vocals
Ali McQueen – vocals, guitar
Pete Smith – tuba, vocals
Benedict Taylor – viola, vocals
Anna Tilbrook – piano
Josh Warren – violin, vocals
Joe Walters – piano, horn, trumpet guitar, vocals

Showtime – with Redbridge Brass plus guests

West End singer Nigel Richards and the hugely talented Jane Wilkinson join the line up in this Broadway spectacular. Expect the usual stunning sounds from the 28-piece band as they romp through show classics from Les Mis, Chess, Phantom, Aladdin, the Lion King and more.
