20mph roads coming to Wanstead?

Redbridge is proposing to introduce 20mph speed limits to a large part of Wanstead including Aldersbrook and the roads between the A12 and Overton Drive. The plan also includes speed humps on several roads including Blake Hall Road.

In a consultation document distributed in the affected area, the council says:

The main objective of the proposed scheme is to make this area safer for all road users. The proposed scheme will help reduce vehicular speeds, reduce the occurrence of collisions and improve road safety in the area. There have been 41 collisions resulting in injury including 7 involving serious injury in the latest three years for which data is available (to 30th September 2024). The scheme also includes pedestrian crossing improvements at some locations that will make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

Residents are being asked to complete a survey as part of a consultation process on the proposals – the form is available here – and submissions are open until 5 June.

    1. Thankfully! All part of the non-stop war against us wicked motorists who must be punished by making driving ever more awful in order to get us safely back to the Stone Age.

  1. It would be useful to know which roads the “41 collisions involving injury” occurred on. If the bulk or on the Blake Hall and Aldersbrook Roads, I think there’s enough traffic controlling systems on these 2 roads already without adding any more.

  2. If people are going to speed on the roads it doesn’t matter what speed limit you apply, I live on Northumberland Avenue, most of it is 20 mph but every day around 05:30 to 06:00 a black BMW speeds down the road at 40+ mph

  3. Another money making scheme from Redbridge council. You can’t go much faster than 20 on Aldersbrook Road or Blake Hall due to the ridiculous humps and cycle posts (so dirty they can’t be seen at night). Just like the “yellow boxes” that suddenly appeared (and hopefully disappearing) it’s just another money making scheme aimed at motorists. Tried it in Wales didn’t work!

    1. In wales it’s estimated to have saved 80 lives, £45m and £5 off everyone’s car insurance. Sounds like it’s working to me.

    2. Many of the offending drivers don’t have front number plates or have stealth number plates. The red lights are routinely ignored in Wanstead high street so I fear, without enforcement by police, it won’t achieve its aims. There needs to be a holistic approach to road safety – bright, illuminated advertising hoardings at roundabouts, for example, dazzle drivers, as do the very bright headlights. Doctored E-bikes seems to be a dreadful hazard etc.

  4. Safety should always be a top priority but for goodness sake review properly and don’t waste our money . At what time of the day do incidents occur?
