Air is getting cleaner

Even though there are sweltering temperatures predicted again for next week, here is some good environmental news. The air in Redbridge is steadily getting cleaner.

Nitrogen dioxide levels have fallen by 40% since 2018, a report from Redbridge has shown, and particulate matter (PM2.5) has been cut in half compared to the 2028 target. Cleaner vehicle emissions are one of the key ways the reduction has been achieved, along with local policies such as planning controls.

Councillor Jo Blackman said the council planned to go further in its efforts in the next few years, saying: “This is a huge step forward for Redbridge. People in Redbridge can enjoy cleaner and healthier air, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases and improving overall quality of life.”

  1. Really! What about the boy racers who scream around the streets, often in convoy, as if on a race track. Many have their car exhausts altered to make them noiser and back fire. This involves removing the catalytic converter so the fumes are increased. This is illegal and invalidates insurance; if they have proper insurance at all. Many are named drivers on their parents insurance even though they, not their parents, are the sole drivers. These tearaways pump out out more emissions in an evening than l do in a year. They also significantly impact on our quality of life through disturbance of quiet and sleep disruption. How, many of us, for instance, have had our enjoyment of the High Street spoiled by them driving along at excessive speed and deafening sound. Have mentioned this to the police and local councillors so many times but nothing gets done.

  2. I’m so happy to hear this. My Dad died of a lung disorder despite never smoking a single cigarette in his life. It’s a matter close to my heart. I’m happy for the people of Redbridge that their air is improving.

  3. That’s good to read, however Redbridge Planning still rabidly giving the go-ahead for giant residential complexes to be built within close proximity of the multi-highway Charlie Brown’s roundabout, a major source of pollution within the borough and particularly to those living in that locality of South Woodford. Recent example is the complex at the top of Maybank rd, within touching distance of the Southend arterial road and A406 multi-lanes.. It’s shocking. No lessons learnt from the tragic death of Ella Adoo-Kissi- Debrah.
