This is the 100th Wanstead Weekend Photo published on Wansteadium, taken from the Wanstead Daily Photo blog. What started for Geoff Wilkinson as a year-long exercise has gone far beyond its original ambition. Congratulations to him – and also for the successful craft and photography events he, Lynn and Danielle have been holding as stalwart supporters of the Wanstead Fringe. The above remarkable photo was taken at Saturday night’s Kinema.
PS. For this landmark week, we dropped the Roman numeral. It may return next week.

Day one at the Fringe

The Wanstead Fringe got off to a triumphant start on Saturday, with the return of the Wanstead Kinema. It was a perfect balmy Saturday night at a perfect venue – and was sold out too. Particularly pleasing was the staging of the first Wanstead Conker Challenge, brought to fruition by an early chestnut harvest and the cubs of 21st Epping Forest South.
Wanstead Kinema is awesome. And no rain this year! pic.twitter.com/XJO3xt548N

It came after the day’s other activities also went off with a bang, including craft workshops and tree yoga and the start of the Wanstead Restaurant week. Across the other side of the Flats, the Wanstead Tap was sold out with a gig by Kitchen Sink Drama. It was a pretty full-on day.
Sunday will be just as busy with an extra near-impromptu event – petanque on Christ Church Green. The informal family tournament will start at 2pm, and last a couple of hours. If you have a nice set of Boules, please bring them along. All players under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Also on Sunday afternoon is The State We’re In – a celebration of vintage soul, jazz, ska, and rocksteady at Bar Room Bar.
More details of the events are at wansteadfringe.org
The first Wanstead Restaurant Week
One of the most exciting parts of the Wanstead Fringe is the very first Wanstead Restaurant Week, where some of the more go-ahead restaurants are to offer special Fringe menus fixed at £15. The idea is that people going to Fringe events might eat out before or after events. Or maybe just go out for something to eat to take advantage of the prices.
Restaurants we know of which are taking part are Manor House, Long Horn, Sumo Fresh and from Wednesday The Duke. Congratulations to them for being so go-ahead – we think some others will be joining the list. If any others want to come on board, there’s still time… the Fringe can be contacted on info@wansteadfringe.org
Until then, dine where you see this sign.
Letter to Wansteadium: Fringe hurrah
Wansteadium reader Caroline writes:
Could I just say how excellent the Fringe looks this year? I was given a booklet in Wanstead Station. Just want to say a big big thank you to Wansteadium and all the other participants/organisers. I can’t wait. The only thing is why is Mark Stephens in Conversation and The Tap Supper Club going on at the same time? Arrgh. I want to go to both.
Wansteadium replies: Fret no more, friend. The Supper Club is sold out, giving you a clear run at the excellent Mark Stephens.

@Anaokar @WansteadFringe cloudy, calm 18C and dry. Looks pretty good, I’d say. Enjoy…

Build a Wanstead landmark in Lego

School’s nearly back, but there’s just time to build a Wanstead landmark in Lego. It can be any landmark – the photos are just suggestions – and it can be whatever size you like. And there are prizes for the best – the judging will take place before the showing of The Lego Movie on Saturday night, which is part of the Wanstead Fringe. The competition is open to adults too. But children will probably win.
Bring models along to the gardens of Christ Church on Wanstead High Street by 7pm on Saturday night. Attendance at the movie (to which all under-16s must be accompanied by an adult) is not necessary, but would of course be awesome. Tickets can be booked here.
Now this IS cool – the Wanstead Fringe app!

As if the Wanstead Fringe wasn’t nifty enough, we are delighted to announce the Wanstead Fringe app! It’s available for both iPhones and Android phones, and will be the best way of keeping in touch with Fringey events since it will have live information (in case anything changes).
It’s been built by Wansteadium reader and good egg Adrian Ward – to whom we extend our thanks – and is available now from the iTunes App Store and from Google Play. Please follow the correct link below.
