The plans to redevelop Wanstead Leisure Centre which include a swimming pool are still on track, Redbridge Council has confirmed. After Covid put a halt to works, building is due to start again in the summer

A spokesperson for Redbridge Council told Wansteadium:

We’re currently undertaking an exciting major expansion of Wanstead Leisure Centre near Wanstead Station to provide a 25m length swimming pool and a new dance studio to complement the existing gym, badminton, and squash facilities. The work is due to be completed in late 2022.

  1. There was a swimming pool when I was at school there in the 1960s. A horrid, cold outdoor one that I did my best to avoid. Then they defiled the wonderful Lower Field, scene of many a happy summer lunchtime laze, with a monstrous leisure centre.

    1. I remember that pool very well, got my mile certificate, went up and down about 112 times…may have got that wrong.
The changing rooms were open to the sky and the water was freezing.

  2. I will be very surprised if the Council achieve this deadline of 2022. The make shift classes sat in the car park for months due to planning issues. Furthermore, other building projects didn’t stop due to Covid, so why did this one? Surely, with the school partially opened and no exams, this was an ideal opportunity to make up for already lost time.
