Spending more time in the pub

10998865_946225875418351_888595541621428281_nIt will be interesting to see how the Duke’s co-working Tuesdays work out. Home-workers, freelancers and students are among those being invited to bring their work to the pub, which is offering the essential elements of powerpoints, wifi, coffee and a friendly neighbour to watch your laptop while you go to the toilet. It’s the sort of venture that Wanstead has needed for some time – the logjam in the library is a familiar frustration (as is the sign on the Churchill Room door that it is NOT a place for studying).

So good luck to the co-workers. Reports on the venture are welcome.

Playground update

frozenThe crowdfunding appeal to raise money for refurbishment of Wanstead’s playground on Christ Church Green has had a number of boosts. Three £500 donations – from Dabora Conway, Martin & Co and Zeeba Daycare – have taken the total to more than £8,000. There are still three weeks left for the campaign to reach its £13,000 goal.

One of the campaign’s fundraising events was a Frozen singalong at the Duke on Saturday which raised more than £300 (Geoff Wilkinson was there to capture the moment). Two similar events have been planned for 18 April and 13 June – and people wanting to pledge money NOT to have Frozen earworms given to them can do so at www.spacehive.com/wansteadplayground.

‘Unique and stunning’ potential for Wanstead Park

There’s another week left to take part in a consultation on the future of Wanstead Park. Plans published by the Corporation of London for its future say it has “the potential to become one of the finest parks in East London – a unique and stunning landscape combining a sense of wilderness, tranquillity and experience of nature with spaces for fun, entertainment and getting active outdoors”. Among the possible developments include the following:

Geoff Wilkinson writes on Wanstead Daily Photo: “I walked along the path following the lake in Wanstead Parklast Sunday and arrived at The Grotto. Built in 1761 it was actually the boathouse for Wanstead House in its heyday, as you can see it’s a bit of a ruin now but it still looks attractive. I think there has been some work going on as there appears some debris in the lake and the undergrowth around the site has been cut back to allow access to the fence. You can now get a clear view of what was the inside as you can see below. It wasn’t great light so I converted the pictures to black and white.”

A consultation on the future of Wanstead Park has been launched by the Corporation of London. More details to follow.
