Wanstead weekend photo, XC

Geoff Wilkinson writes: “If you are a regular follower of Wanstead Daily Photo, you’ll know that I don’t have much interest in cars. However, when I saw this beauty in the car park the other day I couldn’t help but stop and stare, it looked amazing, what a driving machine. Unfortunately the young lady driving it was off before I got a chance to speak to her so I don’t know any detail but what a great looking car.”

Wanstead IS to get its own fishmonger

20140603-225600-82560352.jpgWanstead is to get its long wished-for fishmonger, the man behind the venture has confirmed.

Wansteadium reader Kevin Murphy, who has lived in Wanstead for 12 years, told us that his plan is “to give Wanstead a decent quality traditional-style fishmonger”.

“In the years I’ve lived in Wanstead there hasn’t been one here. I lived in Leytonstone before that – the fishmonger there closed when the Tesco opened and there hasn’t been one there since, so I think it’s definitely something the area needs,” he said.

“People are a lot more conscious of where there food comes from nowadays and I aim to be able to tell them where the fish is from. I shall actively be trying to source all fish from sustainable stocks, and where possible to get stock from MSC certified suppliers. I know this isn’t always going to be possible but it is something we feel quite strongly about and we’ll do our best.”

His background is not in fish, but rather in building “dealing systems and compliance engines” in the City. But the new shop, next door to Nice Croissant, will be the result of some years’ planning. In due course it should also include home-smoked fish.

It marks an enterprising period of regeneration for Wanstead, following on from the successful renovation of the Duke on Nightingale Lane. Plans for a gastro pub in the Manor House (the former Conservative HQ/Allied Irish Bank) are progressing, as is the burger restaurant Longhorn, shortly to open in the former Cinnamon.

Geoff Wilkinson writes on Wanstead Daily Photo: “Now here’s a mystery that I would like to solve. If you go to the High Street end of Nightingale Lane, stand against the wall of the United Reformed Church and look straight along the Lane what do you see? Well if you look very carefully, in the distance several miles I’m guessing, you will see the rather grand house in the centre of the picture above. It doesn’t look like a modern building more of a small old mansion. I have no idea where it is, Chigwell perhaps, or a bit further, any suggestions welcome.”

Missing dog: The owner writes

Lee Desperance, a new Wansteadium reader, writes: “I would like to say a BIG thank you to the lady who found my small black pup in Wellelsey Road and took her to the vets. We found her due to a passer by telling us that they had seen her on this web site. It has taken me a long time as I had to wait for my grandson to come and set me up on Wansteadium. Thanks again lady.”

BBC reporting that Labour gain Redbridge, taking it from No Overall Control. It’s the first time Labour has had a majority in the borough.
