The end for another Wanstead garage?

Stevens Motors, a mechanic’s situated behind the Cuckfield pub, is facing closure following a planning application which would see two semi-detached houses built on the site.

Redbridge Council is to consider the application which would mean a four- and a three-bedroom house being built on the site where the garage has been operating for more than 40 years.

Mr Stevens himself has many longstanding customers who have relied on his service. One told Wansteadium: “Mr Stevens is a local hero and has provided an essential service in car servicing and repairs for Wanstead residents for many decades.”

If the plan is approved it will mean the end of another garage in Wanstead – in 2015 the former I&K Brown garage on Church Path closed and was converted into very stylish residences (see below).

People wanting to object to the proposal must however do so immediately as the consultation period ends on Tuesday 21 October. Details can be found here, ref 187753. [The short notice is Wansteadium’s fault. Apologies.]

  1. We have used this garage for years. How uncanny that having tried three different ways, Redbridge Council website doesn’t allow me to find the application or make an objection. Looks like this is done and dusted whatever we do

  2. I understand from a former Wanstead resident that the garage was once the local abattoir with cattle driven in from Nightingale Lane.

  3. I can’t find any way of registering my objection on the website detailing the proposal. Has the option been withdrawn even though it is the final day?
Is Mr Stevens actually being evicted, or does he want to terminate the business? If he is being evicted from the site, I really object as there is a need for an independent garage in Wanstead and would be a loss of an important facility and of far more value to the community than another dwelling

  4. Am really sad to see this business close .Mr Stevens had saved us a few pounds over the years . Amazing local service . It must be a challenge for small businesses like this to survive these days .
