An amazing shot of old Wanstead (now with added blue plate)
A view of Wanstead from 1900. Wansteadium reader Jill Stock sent us this photo which was taken by her husband Michael’s great uncle Hezekiah Collins (got to love those Victorian names).
The picture shows the Swiss Cottage, which was in the garden of Lake House in Wanstead which was demolished in 1962 to build the Met. Police Cadet quarters. The elderly gentleman is Michael’s great grandfather, John William Collins and the little girl seated on the slope, is his granddaughter Emelia (Hezekiah’s daughter).
What a cracker. Could almost be painted in blue on a plate.
Update: We couldn’t resist. Here’s the blue plate version...
Anyone who has photos – especially old ones of Wanstead – to share, please email copies to info@wansteadium.com
Wanstead weekly photo
Three beauties this week, though all very different. First up is Susan Matthews, who says she took this picture to disprove a BBC weather forecast which claimed there was no fog in London on Sunday morning.

Second is this from Instagram user “Lebaronfabs”, aka Fabien, who has got a great angle on a familiar sight.
The third image is from Leslie Caswell, which is shift in tone. Thanks to everyone. You can submit your photos for next week’s selection by sending them to info@wansteadium.com.
Tap thought
An aside, but this tour list is a demonstration of how far the Wanstead Tap has come in becoming a pretty smart entertainment venue in less than two years. Mr Tap, Dan Clapton, counters comments that it is not in Wanstead by pointing to a 1900 map which shows the historic parish boundaries, just stretching as far as his railway arch.
Another amazing drone shot of Wanstead
(Comes after our post Great views of Wanstead from above with some video taken earlier by Haz Anwar.)
A bit of colour
Congratulations to Wanstead hair salon Zoology for the opening of its new Colour Lab – something which justifies their inclusion in our occasional highlight of businesses which are making a contribution to Wanstead life.

The flamboyant decor of the Colour Lab is visible from the High Street even for those who are not having their hair colour sorted. The lab comes after Zoology garnered a string of accolades and awards, and after being a presence in Wanstead for 18 years.

As boss Mark Mountney (“chief zoologist”) told us last year, he started his business in 1996, Marks of Wanstead, which was where Envi nails is now. In 2002 they moved into their current spot which was the M11 Link Road office (and before that had at one stage been the Wanstead Library – though we’ve never seen photographic evidence of that… if anyone has any we’d be grateful to see it.)
So hats off to Mark and co – and we’re happy to give you the further accolade of inclusion in  Wanstead is made in Wanstead.
