Wanted: Wanstead steakhouse reports…

Wansteadium was over-eager in expecting the new Queen’s British Steak House and Grill on New Wanstead to open last week – but it WAS due to welcome its first customers on Thursday night. As previously reported, it’s a venture which comes with some high expectations. Wansteadium reader Pete Smith said: “Very much looking forward to it. Wanstead already has some fine restaurants so a quality steak house will fit right in.”
So any first hand experiences (menus, pricing, service, atmosphere) welcome.

  1. Popped in for lunch today. The on- site parking is very handy given the parking hassles of Wanstead. We were greeted by a smart, friendly waitress. The decor is much improved from before with a slight smell of wet plaster! The music was not intrusive. I’d say the dress code would be casual to smart casual. The menu was varied and not just meat! We opted for the lunch time offer of 1 or 2 courses for £8.95 or £11.95 respectively. The pork terrine/piccalilli and smoked salmon starters were both well presented and of a high quality. The terrine was particularly moreish. For main course we opted for the pork chop with potato mash and savoy cabbage as well as the vegetable and barley pearl hotpot. The chop was huge! Tender and juicy. Probably the best I’ve tasted. The accompanying gravy was smooth and meaty ( and didn’t taste like the granule stuff!) The only criticism was the mash. Lovely buttery flavour but a grainy texture. The vegetable and barley hotpot was full of flavour whilst keeping the texture of the vegetables. The accompanying mash, was in our opinion, rather unnecessary. Service was swift (30 minutes from start to finish) which is good for lunch. All the staff were appropriately attentive with a good knowledge of produce being used. As the place was almost empty these facts may not be representative of all lunchtimes! Overall we felt it was excellent value for money. The food was delicious and we’ll definitely try the steaks next time! (We didn’t try the coffee after the last review!)
