Wansteadium Blitz project; Herongate Rd, Woodlands Ave, Southview Drive, Colvin Gdns

After a gap in Blitz bombing on Wanstead which had lasted from 15 February, this week in 1941, German planes dropped an incendiary on Herongate Road, causing a fire which was extinguished. They also dropped:

  • three high explosive bombs on Woodlands Avenue, causing fires and bursting water and gas mains (2114 on 19 March)
  • high explosives on Southview Drive, trapping and injuring one person (at 2155)
  • high explosives on numbers 2,4,6 and 8 Colvin Gardens, trapping people (at 2205)
  • a mine on Wanstead Park, which didn’t explode but led to the evacuation of Northumberland Avenue (at 2308)

A further bomb fell on Wanstead Park on 20 March, causing damage to property.

• Former Leyton and Wanstead MP Harry Cohen has lost his appeal against having a £65,000 allowance withdrawn following his involvement in the MPs’ expenses scandal.
• TFL is asking Wanstead residents what it thinks of its Olympic-related road closures programme. All in all, they’re relatively minor, but do affect the A12 and Redbridge roundabout, though not everyone is happy about them.Details here on this PDF. (Thanks to @lucretiaborgia1)

One Deko’s long farewell reaches conclusion

Designer shop One Deko has at last reached the end stages of its withdrawal from Wanstead High Street. Nearly all the stock has been removed from the premises and though there has not yet been a formal closure, it’s clearly not many days away.

The firm is, though, still trading at Spitalfields and is actually about to move into larger premises there in the heart of the market.

Though hardly an unexpected move – the shop lease has been advertised for many months – the reasons for the closure are the same as for Horsfall and Wright last year; simply not enough passing trade.

Many will say, however, that the shop was just not pitched right for its location, being more of a speciality designer boutique than the sort of shop you might just pop into to buy a present for someone.
